Jeff's Top 7 Job Search "Suggestions"

Jeff’s Top 7 “Job Search” Suggestions:                                     October, 2011
(Note: the following suggestions assume that you have an excellent resume, you are prepared for behavioral interview questions, your background check will pass inspection, etc.)

1.   NETWORK, NETWORK, and Network some more…
a.    It’s a known fact that most people land in jobs today directly because of their networking.  Some career experts suggest that you spend 80% of your time networking or 32 hours in a 40 hour week, and the other 20% online researching companies and applying for jobs.  Understand WHAT networking is, HOW it works, WHEN to do it, WHO to do it with, and WHERE to do it.
b.    Network resources include LinkedIn, Face book, and Twitter.  www.networkingphoenix.com is also a great site to find free and paid networking meetings in the Phoenix, AZ area; www.careerconnectors.org is one of the premier networking groups in the Phoenix area.  Dave Sherman (www.daveshermanspeaks.com) is known in Phoenix as the “networking guy” and often has workshops and seminars to teach the networking process.

2.     KNOW THYSELF…or know your strengths and abilities, know what you want, why you want it and be able to give someone a confident, well-rehearsed 30-60 second elevator pitch on those things.
a.    Can you tell someone what “personality” type you are?
b.    Can you give them objective or 3rd party proof about your strengths and what kind of job you fit best into?
c.     Do you have a story or example for most questions asked of you?

3.    DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO REMAIN POSITIVE AND REALISTIC during your job search.
a.    For most this means getting proper sleep and exercise (regain your routines);
b.    Hang around with positive, energetic people and don’t allow yourself to get sucked into negative conversations about jobs, the economy, etc.
c.     Read books or articles that energize you;
d.    Listen to music that motivates you, reinforces your passion, etc.
e.    Remember, it’s all about Framing & Perspective;

4.   LOOK AT JOB SEARCH FROM THE “EMPLOYERS OR HIRING MANAGERS” PERSPECTIVE…
a.    Most people in job search today look at their job search from THEIR perspective versus the EMPLOYERS perspective.  (Human nature versus common sense);
b.    Make points and ask questions from THEIR perspective;
c.     Find out what THEY are looking for in this position and see if and how you are a good match or fit.
d.    Know what hiring managers are looking for in this hire…do the job?  A good fit?  Coachable or trainable?  How long will it take to get up and running?  Are you going to leave the job when you find a better one?

5.   DIFFERENTIATE YOURSELF FROM THE OTHER 319 RESUMES THEY ARE LOOKING AT…
a.    Know some things that make you different and be able to tell a story about that if asked.
b.    Do things differently than most people.
c.    Understand the importance of body language in effective communication, study shows 7% words, 38% tone and how we say what we say, and 55% body language.
d.    Doing #’s 1-4 above will help differentiate you from the crowd.

6.   HAVE A JOB SEARCH PLAN AND WORK YOUR PLAN !!
a.    Do your research and know what you want and where you will fit best.
b.    Have a weekly job search plan with goals, monitor your activity and make changes as needed.  (Most people DO NOT have a plan)
c.    Plan on putting in serious time and effort to be successful in job search, author Malcolm Gladwell talks about the 10,000 hour rule in his best seller “Outliars.”

7.   UNDERSTAND THE RULE OF 3.2 !!
a.    In his book “48 Days to the Work You Love” Dan Miller says that “the average American will be working in their job for 3.2 years and then will be looking again.”
b.    Will you be ready for your next opportunity?
c.    Manage what you can control and don’t worry about what you can’t (3%).
d.    Always continue to network (physics example).
 Application Question:
At the end of the day, the real question is do you buy any of these strategies or suggestions and if you do, how are you going to apply them?  Or will you continue living out the classic definition of insanity…”Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”  It’s up to you…make it happen!

"If It's Going To Be...It's Up To Me" a poem by JD Walker

I was networking the other day with a good friend named JD Walker and he shared a poem that he wrote on "Choice" and I wanted to share it with you.  Thanks JD, wise words that will hopefully help others in the same boat!

IF IT’S GOING TO BE, IT’S UP TO ME…IT’S ALL ABOUT CHOICE!
By JD Walker August, 2010

Do I look at the bright side and say YEA, or the dark side and say NAH?
            If it’s going to be, it’s up to me…it’s ALL about choice!
Do I focus on the loss of job and sob or the possibility of positive change and smile?
            If it’s going to be, it’s up to me…it’s ALL about choice!
Do I start each day with a plan, or cross my fingers and hope for the best?
If it’s going to be, it’s up to me…it’s ALL about choice!
Is it ALL about me or am I looking help and assist others with needs greater than mine?
If it’s going to be, it’s up to me…it’s ALL about choice!
Do I let this circumstance crush me, or do I see it as a time of personal growth?
If it’s going to be, it’s up to me…it’s ALL about choice!
Do I ask “What can I do for you?” or do I solely concentrate on what I can do for me?
If it’s going to be, it’s up to me…it’s ALL about choice!

Note: JD Walker was laid off after 9+ years with a Phoenix company in an executive level management position.  He spent 18 months in job search working several part-time gigs until landing a full-time position with a training company in Phoenix.  He suffered major challenges financially, physically, relationally, spiritually and emotionally yet used the “choice model” listed above to help him through that dry time in the desert.  He spends some of his 168 hours a week networking and helping others as they struggle in their own career advancement challenges.  You may also find him at a Career Connectors meeting!

Started new LinkedIn group called "Mentors, Hero's, and Key Influencers"

There are many, many people in my life that have been mentors, hero's and key influencers, where do you start? After networking with one of those people, Jay Lohman, I decided to start an open group where anyone could acknowledge, thank, and praise such people in their lives.  Jay is the first of many I will honor, how about those in your life?  Please join the group and start sharing these positive stories!  Thanks, Jeff

Networking...the definition of ?

Other Career Experts tell us that "NETWORKING" is the key to an effective job search and landing quickly (within 6 months...my definition).

Yet, I can ask 10 people what their definition of Networking is and I get 9 different answers and typically 1 definition is right on,  6 or 7 have some of the important elements and 1 or 2 are out in left field...no clue!

So, the educator, teacher, trainer, and coach in me wants to help people understand NETWORKING but, more importantly APPLY it in their job search so they can land in their next position more quickly (efficiency and effectiveness).

For the record, please tell me YOUR DEFINITION OF NETWORKING and more importantly HAS IT WORKED FOR YOU IN LANDING JOBS?

How do you eat an elephant?  One bite at a time...so let me know your thoughts and let's combine our efforts and help the world!

I recently met with a new friend, Jerry Jerome.  I first heard Jerry speak at a Career Connectors event awhile back and really connected with him.  His heart is to help people in job search which is one of the reasons he wrote the book "Instant Inspiration...Using quotes to guide you to your goals".  Not only does Jerry provide some excellent quotes from famous people but they are categorized around the topic of "Achieving Your Goals in Ten Phases and a Ten Step Action Plan to help all of us achieve our goals."  Jerry's website is www.jerryjerome.com and his phone is 480.759.2987.  Nice job Jerry!

Networking challenge #1

I just got an email from Elizabeth B, MS and she said "The main challenge is finding contacts at companies of interest who are willing to have informational meetings. Many people I find on LinkedIn or through other methods either decline to meet, or never respond. They say that almost anyone will meet for 20 minutes over coffee, but people are so overstressed and afraid of losing their own job, that I find you're lucky if even a third of the people you ask will actually meet with you."

I have had the same experience and the same frustrations, so what is the answer?  I am putting this out to get your thoughts and feedback on so we can help each other make some progress in this area.  Let's have some discussion and then create a solution, your thoughts?

Brainstorm idea: What is there was a individual or group that had a list of key people that were open to informational meetings and they could introduce you with a "warm" handoff versus you calling or emailing cold?
